It was around this time that I visited a doctor after I broke out in an unusual rash all over the top half of my body.

‘We don’t know exactly what causes this rash,’ she said, ‘but it could be stress-related. Have you been under any unusual stress lately?’ she asked.

‘You could say that,’ I answered wryly.

It seemed Hoff wasn’t the only one who was sporting some physical battle scars of a life in rugby league.

1 Remember when I said that Hoff had become a premiership-winning player and nobody could ever take that away? Yeah, they took it away.

2 The number of times I’ve read about something that is actually pertinent to my existence in the newspaper before hearing it anywhere else is quite laughable. Particularly those times when the things I’ve read did not turn out to be factual. Plus, my grandma reads these things, too, so then I need to explain myself to her. The point is, there must be a better way.

3 In any other circumstances I think I might’ve found the melodramatic assumptions that there were ‘paper bag payments’ and other old-timey criminal devices amusing. You know, if it had been happening to someone else and not me and the love of my life.

4 Actual verbatim quote.
